Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon visits the Supreme Court of Korea to strengthen bilateral judicial ties
In 2020, against the backdrop of the pandemic, the Supreme Court of Korea and Supreme Court of Singapore signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote the efficient administration of justice in the respective jurisdictions. On 11 March 2025, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Korea, Jo Hee-de hosted The Honourable the Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon at the Supreme Court of Korea.
The Chief Justices engaged in a meaningful dialogue during a bilateral meeting, reflecting on the progress made since the MOU's inception and exploring avenues to further deepen judicial ties. The discussions extended to embracing technological advancements to improve access to justice, sharing of best practices in international dispute resolution and exchanging insights on developments in intellectual property law.
In the course of the two-day visit from 11 to 12 March 2025, the Singapore delegation toured the Seoul Bankruptcy Court, following the MOU signed in 2018 with the Seoul Bankruptcy Court on cooperation in transnational insolvency proceedings. The delegation also gained insights into the work of the Judicial Research and Training Institute, Judicial Policy Research Institute, Supreme Court IT Center and Intellectual Property High Court, showcasing their commitment towards judicial excellence.
At a separate event organised jointly by the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) and the Korean Council for International Arbitration (KOCIA), Justice Philip Jeyaretnam, the President of the SICC, delivered a speech titled “The Singapore International Commercial Court and International Arbitration”. Justice Jeyaretnam addressed the role of the SICC in the context of transnational justice, highlighting the Court's instrumental role in supporting international arbitration. This concluded with an interactive dialogue session where Chief Justice Menon and Justice Jeyaretnam addressed questions from the participants, providing them with the opportunity to engage directly with the Singapore delegation and better understand SICC's role in international dispute resolution.
Reflecting on the visit's impact, Chief Justice Menon remarked: "On behalf of the Singapore delegation, I would like once again to thank Chief Justice Jo and his colleagues for the tremendous hospitality that was extended to us throughout the visit. It was a great privilege to have the opportunity to engage in thoughtful discussions on areas such as the use of technology in our justice systems, as well as to explore areas of potential collaboration. This visit underscores the strong and excellent ties between the Singapore and South Korean judiciaries, and sets the stage for future cooperation."
