Inaugural Singapore-China Legal and Judicial Roundtable

21 August 2017 - Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon led a delegation of senior judges and officers from the Supreme Court and Ministry of Law to China. He is in Beijing to co-chair the inaugural Singapore-China Legal and Judicial Roundtable with President of the Supreme People's Court (SPC) of the People's Republic of China, His Excellency Zhou Qiang. The Roundtable, which was convened on 21 August 2017 under the theme "Judicial Justice in the New Century", is the first between China and an Asian country. Chief Justice Menon in his opening remarks at the Roundtable said that "the Roundtable signifies an important milestone in the growing relationship between [the] two judiciaries, enabling our judiciaries to promote and strengthen judicial exchange, deepen cooperation, learn from each other, and work together to tackle common challenges."

2. On 21 August, Chief Justice Menon had a bilateral meeting with and was hosted to dinner by SPC President Zhou. Both sides reaffirmed the strong relationship between both courts, and discussed ways to further deepen pragmatic cooperation on judicial issues in an increasingly globalised and interconnected world with growing numbers of transnational transactions. Both sides agreed that there was much potential for further legal and judicial cooperation on mutual recognition and enforcement of monetary judgments, judicial training for judges, and the "Belt and Road" initiative. As a sign of the further strengthening ties between the two courts, Chief Justice Menon and SPC President Zhou signed a Memorandum of Understanding on legal and judicial cooperation.

3. Chief Justice Menon also met with and was hosted to lunch by the Procurator-General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate of the People's Republic of China His Excellency Cao Jianming. Both sides agreed that there had been close and effective legal cooperation.
