Advisory on impersonation scams

ADVISORY ON IMPERSONATION SCAMS

The Singapore Courts would like to remind members of public to stay vigilant and beware of impersonation scams.

1. Officers from the Singapore Courts will never (in bold and black) do these things over a phone call:
  • Ask you to transfer money.
  • Ask you to disclose bank login details.
  • Ask you to install mobile apps from unofficial app stores.
  • Transfer your call directly to the police.

Do not believe the caller even if he or she is able to cite your personal information, e.g. your name or NRIC number.

Scammers may claim to be:

  • A police officer saying you are part of an investigation – they might even accuse you of being involved in criminal activities;
  • A bank officer saying your bank account or credit card has been compromised; or
  • A government official (e.g. LTA, IRAS, MAS, MDDI) saying you have not paid your bill/fine or that your mobile number has been misused for scams.

2. If you receive an SMS from the government, make sure it is sent from the gov.sg SMS Sender ID. Exceptions apply for National Service call-ups and emergency services.

Protect yourself against such scams:
  • Call the 24/7 ScamShield Helpline at 1799 to check if you are unsure if something is a scam.
  • Add the ScamShield app to block scam calls and filter scam SMSes.
  • Add Money Lock to further secure a portion of your savings against scams.
  • Never disclose your bank login or credit card details to anyone.
  • Change any passwords you have that contain your NRIC number immediately.
